The police were called shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday in the Houillère district of Charleville-Mézières, following calls for help from a young woman, reported the public prosecutor Magali Josse.

The police discovered this 23-year-old woman seriously injured in an apartment.

With "stab wounds", she died around 9 a.m.

A 25-year-old young man with whom she had a romantic relationship, according to Magali Josse, was arrested shortly after the discovery of the victim and placed in police custody.

"He partly recognizes the course of events," said the prosecutor.

An investigation was opened for intentional homicide by spouse and entrusted to the Charleville-Mézières police station and the Reims judicial police.

Known to justice, the detainee had been sentenced twice but not for domestic violence, according to information available to Magali Josse.

The couple had no child in common but the victim was for her part "mother", indicated the magistrate, without further details at this stage.

Saturday evening, the custody of the young man was extended.

The Charleville-Mézières prosecutor's office must relinquish the investigation in favor of the criminal department of the Reims prosecutor's office.
