A tripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia in January

A meeting will be held between the foreign ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia "in the second half of January," as announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, in a new step in the rapprochement that began between Ankara and Damascus.

"We decided to hold a tripartite meeting in the second half of January. The meeting may be held in another country," Davutoglu told reporters, according to the Turkish television station NTV.

A tripartite meeting held on Wednesday in Moscow between the Turkish, Syrian and Russian defense ministers was the first since the outbreak of the war in Syria in 2011, which caused great tension in relations between Ankara and Damascus.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated in mid-December that he might meet his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, after meetings at the level of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs.
