Thursday's drone attacks were the tenth since October of more extensive airstrikes.

69 robots were fired across Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian military, 54 of these were repelled, Reuters reports.

- The most important thing to understand about these Russian robot attacks is that it is a strategy that has been there since October.

They will continue to terror bomb Ukraine, civilian critical infrastructure, electricity supply and water supply, says Oskar Jonsson, PhD in Russian warfare.

"Psychological effect"

According to the grid company Ukrenergo, Ukraine's energy system has been subjected to nine Russian robot attacks and 12 drone attacks in the past three months.

After Thursday's attack, power outages were reported in 10 of Ukraine's 25 regions, and in several places electricity was still limited in the evening, CNN and NPR report.

Now Ukraine's energy minister Herman Halushchenko is warning of new large-scale Russian attacks on the energy supply on New Year's Eve.

- They will try to cause maximum damage to the energy system, says the minister in an interview with Ukrainian television, reports CNN.

According to Jörgen Elfving, there is also a symbolic value for Russia to attack at that particular time.

- Should a renewed robot attack be launched from the Russian side, it will have a negative effect on the celebration and expectations for the new year.

It has a psychological effect on the residents of Ukraine and on the will to resist, and it will probably also have an effect on the outside world, says Jörgen Elfving, former lieutenant colonel.
