From Friday's price of 20 öre per kWh throughout the country, the stock market price of electricity drops to 9.7 öre on Saturday on average over the day, also throughout the country.

For a few individual hours during the night of New Year's Eve, prices even become negative on the electricity exchange.

Mild, windy and less consumption because it is the weekend is the explanation.

By comparison, just a few weeks ago the daily price was regularly above two kroner per kWh, with peaks approaching five kroner.

That made December a record expensive month.

And for the vast majority of households, with a variable electricity price determined by the average over the month, it will be the juiciest electricity bill to date.

In southern Sweden (electricity area 4), the August record stands at 3:05 kroner/kWh, but since consumption is much higher in December than in a summer month, the bill will be record expensive even in southern Götaland.

High wind power production and low electricity use

On top of the stock market price, the electricity company's mark-up, electricity tax, VAT and grid fee of just over SEK 1.50 per kWh are added.

According to Christian Holtz, electricity market analyst at the consulting company Merlin and Metis, the cheap price is due, among other things, to high wind power production in the Nordics and Germany.

In Germany, wind power production alone is expected to almost cover the country's entire electricity consumption on New Year's Eve.

Low electricity use as a result of mild weather and the weekend also play a role.

- Electricity use tomorrow will be about 30 percent lower than it was on a cold winter's day last winter, says Christian Holtz.

Can you make money by consuming?

- You save money because the electricity price is lower, but with energy tax and grid charge there will still be a certain cost even if the electricity price is negative.

Electricity prices are not negative enough now.

It would take even more negative electricity prices for anyone to profit from increasing their electricity use.

- Those who are closest to being able to make money from using more electricity are energy-intensive industries, which pay no energy tax and often have a low variable grid charge.
