"Shameless imposture."

The Gogoan association for a Dignified Memory, which together with the Eraikiz group and the Fernando Buesa Foundation forced the ETA members to resign from the 'ongi etorris', denounces the strategy of Sortu and Sare to facilitate the release of ETA members without recognizing the "injustice of the violence".

The group made up of Basque writers, historians and teachers has denounced this "shameless imposture" in the simulated process of reinsertion of ETA members that is resulting in the granting of thirty third degrees by the

Urkullu government

since it assumed the transfer of prisons on October 1, 2021.

Gogoan for a Dignified Memory directly addresses the strategy used by Sortu -the party of the Abertzale left that controls EH Bildu- and Sare -the citizen group led by former Basque councilor Joseba Azkarraga- to speed up the release of ETA prisoners .

Gogoan makes public his "reflections" before the celebration on January 7 of a march in Bilbao to demand "the way home" from the ETA members when practically all of them are already in Basque and Navarre prisons.

The rapprochement with the Basque prisons has constituted the first step in a process that now has continuity with the application of the 'Basque prison model' that favors the fulfillment of sentences in semi-liberty, in theory, to all prisoners incarcerated in Basque prisons .

Googan notes that from 2018 to 2021, the Ministry of the Interior granted 28 third degrees to ETA members, while from October 1 to the present, the Government of Urkullu has granted

33 third degrees

, although twenty have been appealed by the Prosecutor's Office and nine of them annulled with the return of the prisoners to the Basque jails.

The Minister of Justice Beatriz Artolazabal has assumed these judicial setbacks while looking for new ways to circumvent the requirements established in the penitentiary law that, as Gogoan recalls, are established in article 72 of this regulation.

"After decades in which the Abertzale left vetoed the prisoners, with an iron hand and expulsions, the request for grade progressions (unnecessarily lengthening the imprisonments), in 2017 the EPPK [name given to the group of ETA prisoners] changed strategy, but

imposing an unacceptable limit"

, Gogoan notes.

The group of intellectuals for 'A Worthy Memory' recalls the limits established by the former leader of ETA and member of Sortu Anton López

Kubati

and by the former Minister of Justice Joseba Azkarraga: "Each prisoner must act individually in the search for progress and improve their own situation with the impassable lines of no repentance and no whistleblowing."

And they confirm that the ETA prisoners, advised and supported by lawyers and institutional officials from EH Bildu, are circumventing legality and avoiding an ethical commitment to recognize the injustice of violence that responds to a strategy of the nationalist left, the political wing during decades of the band

Gogoan stresses that Sortu - the legal party led by Arnaldo Otegi that leads the EH Bildu coalition - has a triple objective.

The most important is to prevent the gang's prisoners "from making public any gesture of recognition of the injustice of the violence and the "bietan jarrai" that they promoted for decades."

In addition, propagating that "all stories are valid" to

"neutralize the democratic ethical ground that

delegitimizes terrorism", Finally and thirdly, Sortu intends to "reproduce his epic-martyrological story" with the public presence of murals and photos of the prisoners in the streets and in the acts they carry out.

Gogoan confirms that the truth is being misrepresented when the path of restorative reinsertion of the entire ETA group is taken for granted.

"There are some who do (let them follow their own ethical path and allow them their freedom of expression without red lines); but many others, and the group of the nationalist left linked to Sortu, for the moment, no," he warns.

Gogoan's manifesto is made public the day before Sare holds a rally in front of the Martutene prison where some thirty ETA members are imprisoned.

At present there are almost

150 members of ETA

serving their sentences in prisons in Euskadi and Navarra, but also in their homes and in social and health centers in both communities.

Sare has multiplied its acts of support for the prisoners of the band at the end of 2022 as an appetizer for the demonstration that will take place on January 7 in Bilbao.
