An outbreak of bird flu has been detected in a laying hen farm located in Monteux (Vaucluse).

In a press release published Thursday, the prefecture mentioned a “highly pathogenic” outbreak of avian influenza.

To limit the risk of contamination to other farms, the 5,000 poultry on the site were slaughtered, reports France Bleu Vaucluse.

The breeder will be compensated.

In order to prevent the spread of the virus, the prefecture has defined a "protection" zone of three kilometers around the farm.

This concerns the municipalities of Althen-des-Paluds, Bédarrides, Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue, Monteux and Sorgues.

Waterfowl and feather hunting, gatherings of birds and the transport of poultry are prohibited.

A “surveillance” zone, which extends over ten kilometers around Monteux, has also been set up.

It concerns the municipalities of Aubignan, Avignon, Carpentras, Orange, Pernes-les-Fontaines and even Pontet.

This is the first outbreak of this magnitude detected in the department.
