Sudan.. 8 people killed in new tribal clashes in Darfur

Eight people have been killed in new tribal clashes in Darfur, a region in western Sudan that regularly witnesses violence, a non-governmental organization reported Thursday.

Witnesses reported that the clashes erupted late Wednesday night after a man from the African Fur tribe was killed in a dispute with a member of the Arab Rizeigat tribe in Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state.

Later, members of the Rizeigat tribe on motorcycles and armed men attacked members of the Fur tribe living in a camp for the displaced in Zalingei, according to the spokesman for the General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced Persons in Darfur, Adam Regal.

"So far, eight people have been killed and 11 others have been injured," he said.

Darfur is often the scene of tribal violence, as well as other violence stemming from regional disputes and difficulties with access to water.

On Saturday, clashes killed at least 11 people in South Darfur.
