- Thefts of meat have definitely increased, says Stefan Arbhede.

In the clip above, he shows which meat products the thieves mainly steal and he explains what the store does to prevent it.

Costs billions

The meat thieves cost the grocery stores in the country three billion every year.

This is according to the trade association Livsmedelshandlarnas CEO Pär Bygdeson, who is now appealing to the police to investigate the thefts.

According to Livsmedelshandlarna, meat theft has been a problem for many years - and throughout the country.

But during the autumn the problem has worsened, according to both Pär Bygdesson and Stefan Arbhede.

It is partly due to the tough economic situation, which has led to smaller shops and restaurants becoming more inclined to buy in black meat, says Pär Bygdesson, who points out that organized crime is behind it.

Cheating at the self-scan

Nässjö trader Stefan Arbhede says that the problem with gangs has existed for a long time, but that he believes that the increase in meat theft is largely due to private individuals who have had it tougher financially and instead choose to steal the food.

- You might put an extra piece of meat in the lunchbox without scanning it in at the self-checkout, he says.
