"It may be the only time you get to talk during the day."

Hear from the store manager why the grocery store is so important to the islanders.

The fire that ravaged this summer also destroyed apartments and a restaurant.

The grocery store was the only one on the island, which is located in Öckerö municipality, and also served as a post office and pharmacy.

- Many who live here are 70+.

Not everyone has a car and not everyone is very mobile, so this means a lot, says store manager Ann-Louise Nilsson.

Home service, ICA and the Sea Rescue helped

Via a grocery store on Rörö, the home service has received help in ordering food for the islanders.

- A private person has later driven the food out here every Friday and then we have driven them out to the people with our moped, says Ann-Louise Nilsson.

- And when this private person has not been able to drive due to the weather, the sea rescue has driven the goods out.

Store built from vaccination barracks

Ann-Louise also works in the armed forces.

The night the store burned down, she saw her workplace in flames while she worked trying to put out the fire.

After that, work began on building a new store.

- We mourned for a day and since then we have continued, says Ann-Loiuse.

Brand new store awaits

Old vaccination modules were shipped to Källö-Knippla and have now become home to a makeshift grocery store.

A brand new store is planned to be built and will be completed in 2024. Until then, the newly inaugurated temporary store is available.
