OVD-Info is a kind of hybrid between IT company, media and human rights organisation.

Employees monitor political persecution in Russia, collect data on an ongoing basis and provide legal advice to those affected.

Recently, the organization has released a report on the past year.

A total of 210,000 websites with content critical of the regime have been blocked, according to the compilation.

Journalists, politicians and activists have received several years in prison - for everything from having spoken out critical of the war in Ukraine to "treason".

New laws on "discrediting"

This year, Russia has tightened and enacted new laws that can, among other things, give up to 15 years in prison for "discrediting" the Russian army.

Now around 400 people are being prosecuted for this and risk prison sentences, according to OVD-Info.

Two local opposition politicians have already been sentenced to six and eight years in prison respectively.

The report also shows that 20,467 people have been arrested during protests or because of their views critical of the regime in the past year.

106 people have been charged with "extremism" and "terrorism".

Eleven Russians have been convicted of "treason" and at least 20 people are in custody awaiting trial for the same crime.

The longest prison sentence, 22 years, has been given to a journalist.

The shortest sentence, 7.5 years, has been given to a physicist.

Facial recognition in the subway

A total of 141 Russians have been arrested after being identified using facial recognition surveillance cameras.

Such cameras are located in the Moscow subway.

Russian authorities have previously confirmed that such a system is used against those arrested during protests.

In addition, the proportion of women among those arrested has increased from 25-45 percent to 51-71 percent this year.
