The terrible cold snap that has chilled the United States should soon end.

But his toll continues to grow.

At least 53 people have died from the "blizzard of the century" and a higher toll is feared, authorities say, as relief efforts progress and clear.

Of the 53 deaths, 31 were recorded in Erie County alone, which includes the city of Buffalo, New York, where President Joe Biden approved a state of emergency on Monday.

The bad weather that has plagued the country for a week began to ease on Wednesday in the east and the Midwest.

“This is clearly the blizzard of the century,” New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said Monday.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) predicts temperatures will rise to around 10°C by the weekend, but warns of “locally dangerous traffic conditions”.

Victims trapped in their car

The extreme cold that hit the United States was accompanied by heavy snowfall and strong winds, especially in the Great Lakes region.

In Buffalo, paralyzed for five days, a 22-year-old young woman, trapped by snow, died in her car, according to her family.

A video sent by the victim and posted by his sister shows him rolling down the window of his vehicle during the blizzard.

Buffalo Deputy Mayor Crystal Rodriguez-Dabney told CNN on Tuesday that "rescuers flew to the aid of other rescuers."

“It was necessary to first help the relief workers so that they could go and help the population,” she explained.
