Nine winter sports enthusiasts were found unharmed and one seriously injured after an avalanche in Austria on Sunday.

The incident had triggered significant research and raised fears of a very heavy toll.

The snowslide occurred on a ski slope at around 2,700 km above sea level, in the Lech Zürs area, in the Austrian region of Vorarlberg.

Based on the video taken by a skier, the police had initially reported "a dozen people buried".

One of them was saved and a second managed to free herself to go to the hospital.

Only one seriously injured

Seven other people appearing in the footage were eventually found safe and sound.

The avalanche ultimately only caused one serious injury: a person of German nationality who was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the director of the tourist office responsible for communicating on the progress of the operations.

Helicopters and several teams accompanied by dogs were mobilized for the search.

Those rescued are from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the United States.

A strong avalanche danger weighed this weekend on the region as well as in the neighboring Tyrol because of the current thaw in Europe.
