THE ESSENTIAL

  • In kyiv, the day after deadly bombings in southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox celebrated Christmas on Sunday, a strong sign of distrust towards the Russian religious authorities, who will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in two weeks.

  • In Moscow, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, judged that the West was seeking to "divide in order to conquer better", justifying the Kremlin's military offensive against Ukraine which has lasted for more than ten months by, according to him, "the 'union of the Russian people'.

  • On Boxing Day, this Monday morning, a Ukrainian drone attack would have killed three people in a Russian base, according to Moscow.

07:24: Ukraine will request the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council

“Tomorrow (Monday) we will officially express our position.

We have a very simple question: does Russia have the right to remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council and to be in the UN?

said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Sunday.

“We have a convincing and reasoned answer: no, she doesn't.

Dmytro Kuleba pointed out that the issue of Russia's permanent seat on the UN Security Council - also held by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and China - was already being discussed in the diplomatic circles.

Stating that this issue had not yet been raised at press conferences and in public statements by state and government leaders, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy highlighted that "at a lower level, people the question is already being asked of what Russia should become in order not to pose a threat to peace and security”.

The powerful 15-member Security Council is tasked with dealing with global crises by passing sanctions, authorizing military action and approving changes to the UN charter.

07:13: Three dead in a Russian base because of a Ukrainian drone

Russian air defenses shot down a Ukrainian drone as it approached an airbase in southern Russia, with debris from the aircraft killing three people on the ground, Russian news agencies reported on Monday.

“On December 26, at around 01:35 Moscow time (22:35 GMT), a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down at low altitude as it approached the Engels military airfield in the Saratov region,” said reported the TASS news agency citing the Ministry of Defense.

“Following the fall of the wreckage of the drone, three Russian technicians who were on the airfield were fatally injured.
