Gambia's government spokesman said on Monday that two army officers linked to a plot to overthrow the government of President Adama Barrow were arrested over the weekend.

The government recently said it had arrested a group of soldiers in connection with an attempted coup in the small West African country of 2.5 million people that is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal.

Government spokesman Ebrima Sankare said "two other military personnel linked to the coup attempt" were arrested over the weekend.

He added that they "help investigators uncover accusations of plans to overthrow the government."

He said that an officer with the rank of lieutenant in the infantry and another with the rank of captain from the Military Intelligence and Security Unit were arrested on Saturday and Sunday, and the search is still underway for others accused of involvement in the coup attempt.

So far, 7 people have been arrested, including two officers and 5 soldiers, in connection with the coup attempt, which was condemned by leaders of West and Central Africa.

The region has witnessed 6 successful military coups and a violent coup attempt since 2020, raising concerns about the decline of democracy in the region that was seen as making progress in getting rid of the title of "coup belt".
