A winter storm, carrying icy winds and sweeping the central and eastern United States for days, has killed more than 30 people and left tens of thousands of Americans without power on Christmas Day.

The dramatic and provisional toll of the cyclonic bomb that swept through much of the United States during the Christmas weekend.

Named Elliott, this storm is one of the most violent through the country in decades, with freezing temperatures, even polar in some places, cut roads, thousands of canceled flights.

Vehicles stuck since Friday

While most of the storm has passed, conditions were still very difficult in the western United States.

Rescue vehicles are just beginning to be able to circulate normally and help people who have been stuck in their cars since Friday trapped in snow and a total lack of visibility. 

According to Erie County (New York State) official Mark Poloncarz, these weather conditions are unprecedented: "It's like putting a blank sheet in front of you and leaving it in front of your eyes for hours. It looked like that. We had never seen that".

Millions of Americans were also without power for much of the weekend.

Power is gradually being restored, but the companies that manage the networks are still asking their customers to restrict their use.

Good news, temperatures are rising quickly.

In Wyoming, western United States, temperatures felt like -30 degrees.

On Tuesday it will be 14 degrees.
