Yesterday, voters in the Sultanate of Oman voted to choose who would represent them in the membership of municipal councils for the third term in 11 governorates, through smart phones, through the “elect” application.

The elections started yesterday morning in the Sultanate, with the participation of 731,767 male and female voters to choose 126 representatives for them. The voting process ended at 7 pm yesterday.

The number of candidates for the municipal council elections, which are taking place in the current session through the electronic application "Election", reached 696 candidates, including 27 women.

The Undersecretary of the Omani Ministry of Interior, Chairman of the Main Committee for Elections, Eng. Khalid bin Hilal Al Busaidi, praised the ideal start of the voting process, pointing to the positive impressions the ministry received from voters about the conduct of the electoral process and the ease and smoothness of its procedures.

Al-Busaidi said that the municipal council elections are being held for the first time electronically through the "elect" application that was recently launched by the Ministry of Interior, which is a quantum leap in line with technical developments in the world to facilitate the electoral process.

The Undersecretary of the Omani Ministry of Interior confirmed that the “elect” application was designed according to high security standards that guarantee complete confidentiality of the voting process and provide the highest levels of transparency and freedom in the voter’s choice of his candidate, referring at the same time to the electronic “election” application that enables anyone to follow the course of voting processes in All governorates, moment by moment, and access to all statistics and indicators related to them.

The voting process via “elect” takes a maximum of two minutes, as the application reads the voter’s data via the NFC feature of the phone, while following other procedures until reaching the list of candidates in each state, and choosing the desired candidate to vote for.

The voting process requires the availability of a smart phone with NFC, a connection to the global information network (the Internet), a valid personal card, and the voter to be registered in the electoral register.

The steps to vote through the application are carried out by downloading the application on the smart phone devices available in the electronic stores of smart phones for IOS and Android phones that are equipped with two cameras, as the application requires taking a photo of the voter’s original ID card from both sides.

The application will read the data via the NFC feature, while following other procedures until reaching the list of candidates in each state, and selecting the candidate who wants to vote for him.

The third period (2023/2026) comes from the municipal council elections, in which the voting process will take place through the “elect” application, which allows voters to cast their votes in the municipal council elections easily.
