The Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding announced - yesterday, Saturday - that the Award Steering Committee has completed the preliminary screening process for the nominations submitted for the award in its eighth season for the year 2022.

The media spokeswoman for the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding, Dr. Hanan Al-Fayyad, stated, after closing the door for candidacy and nomination for the eighth season of the award "2022", that the Award Steering Committee received this year a group of nominations, representing individuals and institutions concerned with translation, distributed to a number of countries;

They are: Qatar, Spain, Jordan, Emirates, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, Morocco, United Kingdom, United States, Italy, Turkey, Tunisia, Niger, South Africa, Sultanate of Oman, Syria, Palestine, France, Canada, Lebanon, Libya, the Netherlands, Egypt, New Zealand, Romania, Indonesia, Tanzania and Kazakhstan.

Al-Fayyad explained that the highest nominations came from Turkey, followed by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Morocco, Iraq and Jordan, and the nominations of the following nationalities were the highest;

They are: Turkish, Egyptian, Saudi, Syrian, Iraqi, and Jordanian, noting that the nominated works included the various fields of humanities;

Including: Islamic studies, literature, philosophy, social sciences, political sciences, history and others.

Al-Fayyad added that the ceremony for announcing the names of the winners of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding will take place on January 29, on the sidelines of the Conference on Arab and International Relations, Translation and Cultural Problems "9", which will be held on January 28 and 29, 2023.

It is noteworthy that the award, which was established in 2015, seeks to honor translators and appreciate their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the nations and peoples of the world, encouraging creativity, consolidating lofty values, and spreading diversity, pluralism and openness. and the development of international understanding.

It is noteworthy that the value of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding amounts to two million US dollars, and in its eighth session for the year 2022, the Turkish language was adopted as a second main language, after English, and five languages ​​in the categories of achievement;

The categories of the award for this season are: the category of translation from Arabic into English, the category of translation from English into Arabic, the category of translation from Arabic into Turkish, the category of translation from Turkish into Arabic, and the award for achievement in the two main languages ​​“English and Turkish.” As well as categories for achievement awards in translations of selected languages ​​from and into Arabic, namely: Romanian, Kazakh, Swahili, Indonesian Malay, and Vietnamese, as sub-languages.

Regarding choosing the Turkish language as a second language, Al-Fayyad indicated that the nomination of the Turkish language took place for the second time, as it had previously entered the nominations as a second main language in 2015;

This is due to the large number of translations issued by it from and into the Arabic language.

She indicated that the nominations are promising that the process of human knowledge remains present and interest in this aspect is increasing, and that the translation movement remains a living field and an uninterrupted bridge between peoples' civilizations.
