In last year's Christmas address, Pope Francis wished that the situation in Ukraine would not get worse, two months later the country is invaded by Russia.

When he spoke on Christmas Day in front of thousands of spectators on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, he did not mince his words.

- Let the creator enlighten those who can silence the roar of the weapons and end the insane war!

He reminded of the many Ukrainians who this year celebrate Christmas in silence and cold, far from their families and homes.

In his speech, he also highlighted several other countries affected by war and conflict such as Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Myanmar and the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Promised support to Ukraine

German President and former foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for "a just peace that does not reward occupation and exposes the people of Ukraine to despotism and violence" in his Christmas speech broadcast on Sunday.

He also promised further support to Ukraine, especially in the area of air defense.

- Until there is peace, it is a humanitarian requirement that we support those who are attacked and oppressed, says Steinmeier.
