When we greet Göran Strand a couple of days before Christmas, he tells us in passing that one of his photos that same day became "Picture of the Day" on NASA's website.

It is thus as an astrophotographer that he has become best known, in fact with a worldwide reputation.

- It is just as exciting every time something new comes from the James Webb telescope.

The technical level is significantly higher than that of the predecessor Hubble, he says.

For us ordinary amateurs, James Webb's images may look like any other starry sky.

The subjects may be infinitely far away.

Life in space?

Catching light that arose from a star (by astronomical standards) shortly after the Big Bang means that during the billions of years since the light left the star, it has today moved far, far away.

In the end so far that we will never be able to see them again, no matter how much the technology develops.

- The most exciting thing in 2023 will be if they find an exoplanet, where the atmosphere gossips that there could be life, says Göran Strand.

The Downfall of the Milky Way

Very far in the future, the Milky Way will be captured by the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy.

But then the earth has long since been swallowed by the sun.

- Think what images you would get when our entire galaxy collides.

It makes me a little sad that I can't be there then, says Göran Strand.

In the clip, Göran Strand talks about some of the unique images that the James Webb telescope managed to take - among other things, about the small dot in the starry sky which is the most distant star found so far.
