Almost three months after the state police presented plans for a no-guns zone for Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel, the coalition in Römer has still not said whether it wants to support such a zone or not - and where it sees possible room for compromise.

At least, however, the magistrate has now submitted a report in which he reproduces statistics with all registered knife crimes for the past two years.

As the report shows, the numbers refer to police crime statistics.

The state police compiled the figures, which are not publicly available, at the request of the magistrate.

Accordingly, there were 403 attacks with knives in Frankfurt last year.

About 78 percent of the cases were cleared up.

In total, the police recorded 504 victims, including two dead.

27 other people were seriously injured and 167 slightly injured.

Time for decision on gun ban zone still unclear

Thus, the number of knife attacks in Frankfurt has increased compared to the previous year.

In 2020, there were still 336 attacks with knives that were recorded by the police - with a total of 407 victims.

Also this year two victims were killed in the attacks.

40 other people were seriously injured and 165 slightly injured.

"A significant proportion of the crimes," the police said, "can be attributed to the station district."

It is unclear when the magistrate will decide on a gun ban zone.

The Frankfurt police have now fleshed out their plans – and have also taken arguments from the city into account.

Accordingly, the ban on carrying knives should apply in a clearly defined area in the station district, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. in the morning.

In this way, the police want to ensure that "trades that are equipped with dangerous tools" are not affected by the regulation "and thus the legitimate interests of certain professional groups are protected".
