Blizzard kills 22 people in the United States

More than 200,000 Americans woke up without electricity today, Sunday, as a result of the winter storm that has been going on for days in the eastern United States, which has left about 22 people dead so far.

The severe weather, a combination of blizzards and exceptional cold, led to icy winds in 48 contiguous states, stranding travelers, canceling thousands of flights, and residents stuck in their homes covered in ice and snow.

Twenty-two weather-related deaths have been confirmed in eight states, including at least seven in western New York, where lots of snow, high winds and freezing cold hit Buffalo and surrounding cities.

While large swaths of the country began to weather the massive storm and temperatures in some areas returned to seasonal averages, Buffalo continued to experience a "major disaster", as emergency services were unable to reach many of its hard-hit areas.
