At least 10 people have been buried this Sunday by an avalanche in Austria, in the Vorarlberg region (west), according to the police, who acknowledge that there

could be 12 people

.

"One person managed to save himself, while

the operation continues to find the others

," a spokesman told AFP, without giving further details about the event.

Helicopters and several teams accompanied by dogs

have been mobilized for the search .

The avalanche broke out around

3:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. GMT)

at about 2,700 meters above sea level, in the Lech Zürz ski area. No information has been provided on the identity of those affected.

Rescue teams had warned this weekend about a high danger of avalanches in this area, as well as in neighboring Tyrol, pointing to the

fragility of the snow cover

in a context of temperate climate.
