In Senegal, the staff of the ruling coalition met in a seminar on Friday, December 23.

The leaders of the member parties of Benno Bokk Yakaar gathered around President Macky Sall in a hotel in the capital.

A mobilization for the presidential election of February 2024, after a decline recorded in the last local and legislative elections this year.

There remains the great unknown: will the head of state, in power since 2012, be a candidate?

“

Which coalition for victory in 2024

?

This was the theme of this seminar which took place behind closed doors.

Work continued on Friday evening.

Only two resolutions have been made public: one on "

Senegal's resilience in the face of the global crisis

 ", the other on "

the defense of the Republic

", reports our correspondent in Dakar,

Charlotte Idrac

.

Who will be Benno Bokk Yakaar's candidate for the "

decisive

" presidential election for the stability of the country and the sub-region?

The coalition maintains the vagueness.

“

Our Benno majority strictly respects the free choice of its leader, President Macky Sall, with regard to the decisive deadline for the presidential election of 2024. In any case, the seminar launches an urgent call for momentum of vast gathering, the candidate designated when the time comes ensures the triumph of our camp…

”,

declared Maître Ousmane Sèye, one of his leaders.

The question has long been taboo, but several members of Benno Bokk Yakaar recently openly spoke out in favor of a third term for President Macky Sall, or rather

"

a second five-year

term  ", according to them, under the reform of the Constitution in 2016.

The opposition "goes on the offensive"

For the opposition, it would be a "

red line

 ".

While a report from the Court of Auditors pinpoints the management of the response fund in the face of the Covid pandemic, the Yewwi Askan Wi coalition - led by Ousmane Sonko and Khalifa Sall - announced an "

action plan

", from the next week, “

to consecrate the departure of Macky Sall from power

.

»

The opposition "

goes on the offensive

" in his words, reports our correspondent in Dakar,

Juliette Dubois

.

In his statement, Yewwi Askan Wi returns to the events of recent weeks to recall his dissatisfaction: the filing of a motion of censure against the government, challenged in the National Assembly, or the financial scandal around the management of funds Covid,

revealed by a report from the Court of Auditors

.

The coalition also reconsiders the arrest of two deputies for violence on a colleague of the majority, arbitrary arrest according to them which would violate their parliamentary immunity.

They announce the first actions to protest against "

the financial carnage revealed by the Court of Auditors

", and to demand the departure of President Macky Sall.

A concert of pans is scheduled for Saturday, December 31 at 8 p.m., at the very moment when the president will address the Nation.

As well as two popular gatherings on December 30 and Friday January 6.

The Senegalese president, who is in his second term, has not yet said whether he intends to run for a third term, but some of those close to him have recently come out in favor of a candidacy.

Further announcements are scheduled for next week, Wednesday December 28, according to the press release, to roll out the action plan until 2024.
