Today, Saturday, Libya Al-Hadath TV channel quoted retired Major General Khalifa Haftar as announcing a "last chance" to draw a road map and hold elections, a year after the warring parties agreed to hold the polls.

The channel reported that Haftar said, "The General Command announces a final opportunity through which it will draw a road map that includes holding elections."

This came in a speech delivered by Haftar - earlier today - in Benghazi (the second largest city in the country and the headquarters of his forces) on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of independence.

Libya has seen little peace since 2011, the year that saw the overthrow of the late Muammar Gaddafi in his hometown of Sirte.

The country is also witnessing a state of political impasse between two parliaments and two governments that are fighting for power in Tripoli and Benghazi.

After the 2020 ceasefire, the warring parties agreed to hold elections on December 24, 2021, and formed a new national unity government that was supposed to reunite the divided national institutions, but the process collapsed.

It should be noted that Haftar launched an attack - which lasted 14 months - to take control of Tripoli, but the forces of the internationally recognized government repelled this attack.
