Chinese authorities are trying to curb the wave of spread of covid-19 that is going on in the country, China Daily reports.

Strengthen preparedness

On Thursday, China's public health authorities called for intensified treatment of vulnerable covid-19 patients to reduce the effects of the disease.

In addition, the authorities want preparedness to be strengthened for elderly care facilities and emergency medical care in the hope of curbing the spread of infection.

A million per day

According to the media site Bloomberg, China is currently grappling with the largest outbreak of covid-19 to date, where one million people will soon be infected daily.

An analysis by the London-based research firm Airfinity Ltd, this scenario for China could mean 5,000 deaths every day as a result of covid-19.

4.2 million in March

China has approximately 1.4 billion people and the risk is that the infection situation will worsen further.

According to the research company, the number of people infected with covid-19 could rise to 3.7 million in January, and to 4.2 million in March.

WHO: Vaccination important

As SVT previously reported, the too low rate of vaccinations – rather than the lifted restrictions – is the big problem, according to the World Health Organization WHO.

- The challenge that China and other countries still have is: Are people who need to be vaccinated sufficiently vaccinated with the right vaccine, the right number of doses and when did those people last get a vaccine?, says Michael Ryan, executive director at WHO.
