The parcel delivery company recorded a peak in activity never seen before in its history during this year 2022. A success linked to the boom in exchanges between individuals on dedicated platforms.

Quentin Benault, the president of Mondial Relay, was the guest of "La France moves", this Friday on Europe 1.

Online commerce has never done so well in France.

Mondial Relay, a company specializing in the transport of parcels to individuals, will end this year 2022 with figures never before achieved in its history.

While the month of December is often conducive to an increase in volumes transported, due to the end-of-year celebrations, this 2022 vintage has proven to be particularly fruitful.

Quentin Benault, the boss of the company, identifies a major change in consumer habits to explain such success.

"We are really accelerating and above our forecasts on what is called 'C2C', that is to say exchanges between individuals. We are on an increase of 30% compared to the previous year on this activity".

In other words, the French increasingly favor second-hand purchases on sites dedicated to the image of Vinted, a platform offering second-hand clothes and objects, directly put on sale by Internet users.

"I think for once maybe we'll all have second-hand gifts under the tree. That's something new and I think people have really 'switched' to the circular economy."

"The peak of all records"

However, given the unique economic situation of this year 2022, the company has experienced all the difficulty in the world to establish forecasts.

"Between a first half that was down slightly for trade in general, the economic crisis and inflation, it was hard to know on which foot to dance," admits Quentin Benault.

But this surge in second-hand purchases, combined with the success of online commerce as a whole, allows Mondial Relay to spend the holidays warm.

"This year is really the peak of all records", attests Quentin Benault, referring to "records broken" every week "since mid-November".

"It's historic," he says.

Nevertheless, Mondial Relay does not intend to be intoxicated by these convincing results.

From the month of February, it will be a question of working on Christmas 2023. "From the month of January, we debrief what happened in the year before and from the month of February, we start to work on the means, the devices that we will have to put in place for the peak which will arrive in eight months”.
