Eleven days have passed since the Swedish Transport Administration changed the planning system for train traffic in Sweden.

At traffic control centers around the country, the situation is becoming more and more strained - and this also affects the passengers.

In an email sent to the Swedish Transport Administration the other day, Skånetrafiken writes, among other things, that 40 percent of the trains over the Öresund Bridge have been cancelled.

"It is no longer possible to understand and regret", states Skånetrafiken and writes that from now on they will be clear that the cause of the disturbances is the new planning system.

- We can only regret.

It's obviously not fun to have a situation where travelers are affected, says Kenneth Fridolin, head of the traffic management area south of the Swedish Transport Administration.

Requires emergency measures

The situation has caused the Trafikverket's management group in Malmö to demand urgent measures.

In internal documents that SVT has seen, the strained situation is described in a series of points, here are some of them:

• Train numbers have disappeared after the system change, forcing traffic management staff to manually change each number on some trains.

• The possibility of canceling and rerouting trains in the event of any disturbances is described as severely limited.

"It quickly creates an imbalance in the system" which causes it to "cork up again".

• Due to the fact that delays are propagated in the system, train drivers are constantly calling traffic management.

• Short-term sick leave has increased by 100 percent in Malmö.

"Heavy for the staff"

- It is difficult for the staff at the traffic centers and it probably looks the same throughout the country, says Kenneth Fridolin.

SVT has recently reviewed the effects of the Swedish Transport Administration's new planning system - which was introduced despite repeated warnings from both train companies and employees within the authority.

After a week of using the new system, over 400 acute errors or deficiencies had been reported.

Even though train traffic in the country has so far run better than the train companies feared, the staff have been hit hard.

- We will do a proper evaluation of the entire project, says Kenneth Fridolin.
