Yesterday, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, demanded that efforts be made to get Lebanon out of the difficult political and economic situation it is going through, indicating that Lebanon is going through a very difficult and complex political and economic situation.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati received Aboul Gheit yesterday at the Grand Serail in Beirut, according to a statement issued by Mikati's official website.
Aboul Gheit said, after the meeting: “I was honored to meet Mikati in the context of my participation in the economic conference that was held yesterday morning to restore the vitality of the Lebanese economy, and Lebanon is going through a very difficult and complex political and economic situation, but a way out is available and the capabilities exist to achieve this matter, as I said in my speech in Conference".
He added, "There is a political impasse and a difficult economic situation, and politicians and economists should mobilize determination and firmness of opinion, and all of them are required to make efforts as soon as possible to get Lebanon out of this difficult situation."
Aboul Gheit expressed his confidence "in the wisdom of politicians and the effectiveness and ability of economists, to get the country out of this impasse," adding: "All the best wishes for the people of Lebanon and the Lebanese state, and the key must be in the beginning of electing a president, and therefore make up your mind and move forward."
Mikati appreciated Aboul Gheit's "continuous support for Lebanon and the efforts made by the Arab League to strengthen Arab-Arab relations, especially Lebanese-Arab relations."
Mikati noted the keenness of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States on Lebanon, especially in the speech he delivered at the "Business and Economy Forum", in which he stressed that Lebanon does not tolerate a long-term presidential vacancy, and called for the adoption of legislation that safeguards Lebanon and protects its wealth from many of what societies have witnessed. other.
Mikati said during a speech before the Arab Economic Forum in Beirut, "Despite the continuous macro-economic pressures and the continuous financial imbalances in light of the growing political tension, the economy has returned to register this year a growth of nearly 2% in actual terms, after the noticeable net contraction it has witnessed since the beginning of the crisis" in 2018. 2019.
Mikati called for the need to solve the outstanding political problems, foremost of which is the election of a president for the republic, and the implementation of reforms set by the international community and the International Monetary Fund as a condition for Lebanon to obtain financial support.
Lebanon is witnessing the worst financial and economic crisis in its history for more than three years, which resulted in a decrease in the purchasing power of the Lebanese, an increase in poverty and unemployment, and a sharp collapse in the national currency against the dollar.
Lebanon entered the stage of the presidential vacancy after the end of the term of the former President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, on October 31, as the Parliament was unable to elect a new President of the Republic after 10 sessions it held for this purpose.
