A senior official of the UNHCR = United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees held a press conference in Tokyo.

While appreciating Japan's acceptance of those who had evacuated from Ukraine, he also expressed his view that Japan should be more proactive in accepting people who are forced to evacuate from various parts of the world.

On the 21st, a press conference was held in Tokyo by Assistant High Commissioner Gillian Triggs, number three of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In it, Assistant High Commissioner Triggs noted that Japan has received more than 2,000 refugees from Ukraine, saying, "Japan is changing, opening its doors to more people in need of international protection. I see it as a very positive change," he said.

On the other hand, while there are more than 100 million refugees who have been displaced from their homes due to conflicts and other reasons around the world, and the number of people who have evacuated to Japan exceeds 100 million, he pointed out that Japan does not accept many people, saying, "Japan will accept more people. I think it can be done," he said.

In addition, Japan will play a role in resolving the problem by mentioning that Japan will serve as the chair country of the G7 = seven major countries next year and will serve as a co-chair country at the refugee forum scheduled to be held in Switzerland. I hoped for that.
