Tuesday, during a press conference, the spokesman of the US State Department, Ned Price announced the release of two US nationals detained in Afghanistan, seeing here a “gesture of goodwill” from the Taliban.

“This is not part of an exchange of prisoners or detainees.

No money was exchanged, ”assured Ned Price, specifying that the two nationals were on their way to Doha.

The politician, however, refused to give details of the two Americans taking refuge behind rules of confidentiality.

One step forward, two steps back

“It will not have escaped our notice that they made such a gesture of goodwill on the very day that they made a decision that goes against the Afghan people,” added Ned Price.

Indeed, on Tuesday, the Taliban authorities announced that Afghan universities were now prohibited for girls, already deprived of secondary education since the accession to power of the Islamist fundamentalists, further restricting their freedoms.

The spokesperson for the US State Department spoke of a "barbaric" decision after the Taliban announced that Afghan universities would henceforth be prohibited for girls.

"The Taliban should expect that this decision, which contradicts the commitments they themselves made publicly and in front of their people, will have concrete consequences for them," said Ned Price.
