Last week, Anders Thornberg ordered an external investigation due to the turmoil within Sweden's highest police command.

Runar Viksten, former chief councilor and chairman of the Defense Intelligence Tribunal, was appointed as special investigator.

He has previously reviewed Säpo's handling of the terrorist attack on Drottninggatan in 2017, where he concluded that Säpo did not commit any errors.

Anders Thornberg was then head of Säpo - which has led to criticism of the choice of investigators.

- Since the investigation is to look at, perhaps mainly the actions of the national police chief, it is not reasonable for the national police chief to be the client of the investigation, said labor law lawyer Tommy Iseskog last week.

More people should investigate

Member of Parliament Gudrun Nordborg (V), a member of the justice committee, is also critical and believes that the investigation should be strengthened with more people.

- Partly to increase the possibility of a thorough job now that the time frame has been shortened, but also to reduce the risk of it being questioned.

However, the investigator Runar Viksten does not give much to the criticism and says that he is of course completely objective in his assessments.

- I have no ties in any way and do not know the people involved either.

That is why they have engaged an old judge like me, he says.
