The winter solstice occurs when the Earth's axis of rotation is most tilted away from the Sun.

This means it is the day when the sun is above the horizon for the shortest time in the northern hemisphere.

In the southern parts of the country, the days are getting shorter - but at the top of the north, the sun does not appear at all.

The same happens during the summer in the southern hemisphere.
