Burkina: the authorities deny having granted the exploitation of a gold mine to the Wagner group

The Ghanaian president was worried about it last Tuesday in Washington during the United States-Africa summit.

He claimed that Burkina had granted a mine in the south of the country as payment for the services of the Russian paramilitaries.

Simon-Pierre Boussim, the Minister of Mines, met on Tuesday with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

The civil society organization had requested this meeting to have clarifications following the remarks of the Ghanaian president.

It was on this occasion that the minister specified that no new mining title had been granted in the south of the country.  

The only title granted recently to a

Russian company concerns Nordgold

 for the Ymiougou mine, in the center north of the country.

Nordgold is a Russian company that has been working in the country for several years and already had three other mining permits.

No potential link between this company and the Wagner group has yet been established.

The authorities went to the appointment on Tuesday with the documentation concerning the procedures with Nordgold.

Joined by RFI, Jonas Hien, who led the civil society delegation, said he was satisfied with this meeting.
