There is no reliable information about how many have been killed in the war.

The UN has registered 6,700 civilians, while the US estimates the number at around 40,000. In addition, tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are estimated to have been killed.

Ten months have passed since the start of the worst war in Europe since World War II.

And according to Russia expert Gudrun Persson at the Total Defense Research Institute FOI, the war may be prolonged.

- We are in the middle of a burning war.

Russia's fixed goals remain: Russia must dominate its neighborhood, Ukraine must be crushed, NATO must be pushed back - that has not changed.

We must be prepared for the fact that we have a long conflict ahead of us, she says in SVT's Agenda.

Can last several years

She emphasizes that this is no time for speculation about how things will go in the war.

But when asked if the war could last for several years, she answers:

- Yes, I think so.

And not least because Russia caused Ukraine human, material, economic and cultural suffering.

Such wounds will take generations to heal, if at all.

The former moderate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt believes that the war will be decided on the battlefield and last as long as Putin is in power in the Kremlin.

A political change in Moscow is necessary before peace is possible.

- But after the open armed conflict is over, you have to win a peace and it will be even more difficult than winning the war.

There are big questions that lie ahead of Europe, not just in years but decades to come, says Bildt.
