A nice catch.

Guatemalan drug police seized more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine after intercepting a semi-submersible in the Pacific off the country, authorities said on Monday.

The boat was intercepted on Friday 250 nautical miles (about 460 km) from the coast, in international waters, public prosecutor spokesman Moises Ortiz told the press.

He added that three “foreign nationals”, whose nationality was not specified, had been arrested.

The interception was carried out by a boat from the anti-narcotics brigade, with the support of the national police and the army.

In 2021, Guatemalan anti-drug services seized more than eleven tons of cocaine, 20% less than the previous year, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior.

International cartels use Guatemala and the rest of Central America, with the help of local traffickers, as transit points for cocaine bound for Mexico and the United States.

According to Washington, 90% of the cocaine that enters its territory passes through Mexico and Central America in planes, boats or submarines.
