The January 6 committee accuses Donald Trump of committing multiple crimes in connection with the election loss and storming of the Capitol, and is now recommending that the Justice Department file charges.

Among other things, more than 1,000 witness interviews have been held during the investigation.

- The material that is being presented now will be of great interest to the Ministry of Justice.

However, there are political interests in the committee, something that Stefan Åsberg calls the major weakness.

The committee consists of seven Democrats and two Trump-critical Republicans.

- Which means that this committee has had rather low credibility in the United States from the start.

But a job has been done that will be important to anyone in the future who wants to know what happened on this dark day in American history.

Can still run for president

Donald Trump has recently announced his candidacy for the presidential election in 2024. Stefan Åsberg says that a possible prosecution in practice does not affect whether he can run or not.

- But it is clear that it will be a very unique and strange situation where one of the presidential candidates may possibly be suspected of a serious crime.

Recommendations from the committee are not binding, so the US Department of Justice does not have to bring charges.
