In general, hackers attack computer systems, paralyzing administrations, companies or stealing certain personal information.

In Germany, a group of computer scientists chose a completely different target: traffic lights.

Their hacking would be very simple and possible thanks to a laptop, a radio and an antenna, reports BFMTV.

These hackers have thus demonstrated that it is possible to change the color of a traffic light by simply pressing a button.

A simple gesture that can be dangerous since it can cause traffic jams and accidents.

Demonstrate security vulnerabilities

However, for this group, the objective was not malevolent.

These computer scientists, who wished to remain anonymous, just wanted to demonstrate the security flaws.

In the German press, they thus explained that if the lights could not all turn green at the same time, it was possible to play on their duration.

This is explained in particular by the use of analog radio in nearly 80 cities of the country.

This, based on an old protocol, is easier to decipher than digital technology.

However, by 2028 all cities should be using digital technology in Germany.
