The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced Friday, December 16 the closure of his investigation in the Central African Republic.

The investigations, opened in 2007 and relaunched in 2014 at the request of former President Catherine Samba Panza, focused on crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in the country since 2002. If the investigations are completed, the Court has not completely finished with the Central African Republic: several trials are still in progress.

If the investigation is closed, "

our work (...) is far from over

", specifies the prosecutor in his press release.

Two trials are ongoing, and a third is in preparation.

These cases target former members of the anti-Balaka and Seleka militias.

La Seleka, one of whose most senior officials, Noureddine Adam, is still at large, despite the

arrest warrant issued against him in 2019

The Court's investigations had also enabled the trial of

Jean-Pierre Bemba

.

Tried for the role of his movement, the MLC, in the crimes of 2002 and 2003 in the Central African Republic, he was nevertheless acquitted.

Karim Khan specifies that he intends to consolidate his office's collaboration with the Special Criminal Court.

Created by a protocol between the UN and the government in Bangui, the CPS completed a

first trial at the end of October

.

More are to come.

Prosecutor Khan says his office has already shared evidence with his Special Court counterpart in Bangui.
