"I would like to announce that after almost 15 years and 143 matches, the time has come to say goodbye to the Spanish selection," wrote the 34-year-old FC Barcelona player on social media.

"It has been an honor to represent my country and lead it to the highest level, to be world and European champion, to be captain and to play so many matches, with more or less success but always giving everything and bringing my leaves so that everything goes for the best," he added.

Busquets recalled that he had always sought to do everything to "make everyone feel how important they are, helping everyone and fighting for the same goal, with unique, unforgettable and historic experiences".

The iconic Barça midfielder leaves the squad as the third most capped player in history, behind defender Sergio Ramos (180 caps) and goalkeeper Iker Casillas (167).

Busquets was the last representative of the team that won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and was also part of the Spanish selection that won Euro-2012.

He therefore played his last match with La Roja on December 6, in the round of 16 lost against Morocco (0-0, 3 tabs to 0), during which he missed his shot on goal.
