Sara Skyttedal (KD) has turned the corner when it comes to Sweden's drug policy.

From having worked for a zero tolerance towards drugs, she now wants to implement the legalization of cannabis.

"The zero-tolerance is rooted in a notion that drugs are indeed of different severity, but that basically the same problem would apply to all forms of use of preparations that are currently classified as narcotics.

That notion is simply not true," she writes on DN Debatt.

KD wants to see a drug-free society

SVT has previously reported that several youth associations want to review Sweden's drug legislation in different ways.

According to the Christian Democrats' party programme, the party wants to see a drug-free society.

According to Sara Skyttedal, the Christian Democrats are probably the parliamentary party that is the furthest away from changing its stance on the issue.

"In the future, however, I hope that the debate around drug policy can be conducted on a factual basis where the legislators also show an interest in facts that do not confirm their own political position".

Sweden stands out

Skyttedal writes that Sweden's drug policy stands out in two senses from an EU perspective.

For one thing, Sweden has some of the toughest drug laws and at the same time the country has the highest drug-related mortality.

She writes that the harsh laws do not seem to be an effective method for reducing the harmful effects of drugs.
