The Peruvian parliament, which is dominated by the right-wing opposition, voted on Wednesday to dismiss left-wing President Pedro Castillo on charges of "moral incompetence", ignoring the president's decision to dissolve parliament hours earlier.

101 deputies out of 130 agreed to impeach the president in a live televised session, despite Castillo's declaration of the dissolution of parliament and the state of emergency in the country.

Earlier, Washington urged the Peruvian president to reverse his decision to dissolve the parliament, a measure denounced by his deputy, Dina Polarti, as a "coup".

"The United States strongly urges President (Pedro) Castillo to reverse his attempt to dissolve parliament and allow democratic institutions to function according to the constitution," the US ambassador to Lima, Lisa Kenna, wrote.

Pedro Castillo has previously survived two other motions of impeachment, the last of which was in March 2022.

At the time, the opposition accused him of interfering in a corruption case believed to have involved his close associates and of "treason" after he announced his willingness to hold a referendum on granting access to the Pacific Ocean to neighboring Bolivia, which does not overlook the sea.

It also held him responsible for repeating ministerial crises and forming four governments in eight months, which is unprecedented in Peru.
