A medical team succeeds in replacing a complete "aorta" in a patient's abdomen with "Shakhbout Medical"

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, in partnership with the Mayo Clinic, announced that a total abdominal aorta replacement surgery would be performed to save the life of a 35-year-old patient who had an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The patient, Annalin Bissau, a Filipina, was transferred to the emergency department in Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, and she was suffering from severe abdominal pain. Dr. Muhammad Bagnaid, an vascular surgeon at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, immediately received life-saving integrated care, thanks to the response of the experienced medical team and the availability of the latest diagnostic equipment and surgical techniques at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in partnership with the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Bagneed said: "The patient arrived at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City suffering from low blood pressure, accompanied by severe pain at first, then the main aorta in her abdomen swelled and ruptured, causing bleeding, and given the complexity of her condition and the need for immediate intervention, our team had to move Very quickly, so within half an hour of diagnosis, we had placed a clamp on the aorta to stop the bleeding, and as soon as we were able to do that, we proceeded to open her laparotomy and replace the entire aorta with an artificial graft inside her abdomen.”

He explained that unlike known cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke, aortic aneurysms are less common and usually affect people over 70 years old, pointing out that some risk factors, such as advanced age, gender differences, and high blood pressure, can Smoking, genetic or metabolic disorders, can contribute to the development of an aortic aneurysm.

Bagnid added: “Unfortunately, half of the people who suffer from a rupture of an intra-abdominal aortic aneurysm die before they reach the hospital, and only half of those who reach the hospital survive, so it is a serious and fatal condition. In general, these types of Aneurysms are less common in the UAE compared to other parts of the world, such as Europe and the United States, and this may be due to its relatively young population.”

He emphasized that the case of the patient, Annalin, was extremely rare and exceptional, due to the absence of risk factors, as the patient is young and non-smoker, but thanks to the accurate diagnosis and rapid response, I am happy to say that she recovered excellently and was able to return to her home five days after undergoing the procedure.

Patient Annalin Bissau said: "I was in so much pain that I really thought my life would end at any moment. I was so afraid, I can't believe it's over. I feel so much better and relieved now. Dr. Bagnid told me there was no need." I am so grateful to him and the hospital care team for their efforts to save my life.”
