The Russian presidency said today, Tuesday, that Moscow does not see any prospects for negotiations with Kyiv now, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky inspected his country's forces in the Donbass region.

This came hours after Russia announced - yesterday, Monday - that it had repulsed a Ukrainian attack with missiles and drones in central and southern Russia, which was confirmed by Kyiv, speaking of the destruction of two planes at two military bases in the Russian depth.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he agreed with the United States on the need for lasting peace in Ukraine, but he did not see an opportunity for negotiations at this time.

In response to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's remarks on Monday that what is happening in Ukraine must culminate in a just peace, the Kremlin spokesman told reporters that Russia would have to achieve the goals of its "special military operation" in Ukraine first, before holding talks with any potential partners.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that during the past two weeks, his country's forces intercepted 33 heavy-caliber shells fired by Ukrainian forces at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Shoigu added that Moscow considers targeting Zaporizhia to be tantamount to nuclear terrorism.

On the other hand, Al-Jazeera correspondent in Zaporizhia canton quoted the city authorities as saying that two people were killed and four wounded, including a child, following the renewed Russian bombing of many villages and towns in the canton;

The bombing also destroyed some homes and a number of infrastructure facilities in the city.

In the context, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied any talk of her country relinquishing control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, or transferring control over it to a third party.

And Zakharova considered - in press statements - that "the station, which is located on the territory of Russia and is fully managed by it, is the only one capable of guaranteeing its physical and nuclear safety."

Zelensky in Donbass

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the front of the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine as difficult, during a visit by Zelensky to the region, during which he inspected the front positions of the fight against the Russian forces.

Zelensky published pictures of his meeting with a number of soldiers and officers, and expressed his hope that the soldiers would meet again in the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk, and in the Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
