And 29% of the participants in the survey, in which 354 people participated, said that the level of traffic culture among schoolchildren in the Emirates is low, while 39% of them considered that the level is uneven.

56% of the participants supported the inclusion and allocation of a traffic culture subject within the educational curriculum, which includes principles and programs that establish the use of public transportation as a civilized practice.

Umm Ahmed, a working mother and holder of postgraduate studies in science, confirmed that schoolchildren do not have a culture or awareness of traffic laws, and that all they know are just some addresses.

She said that she supports allocating an article in the school curricula related to safety and traffic awareness, provided that it is smooth, clear and not complicated, and that it focuses on behavior and ethics in using the road, and not on teaching students the regulations of laws, standards and regulations for violations.

And she supported that the traffic culture subject be in an advanced stage of education, and for a specific period, stressing the need to focus on teaching them the behavior of etiquette and respect in using the road and dealing with pedestrians, drivers, and all road users.

Another mother, who preferred not to be named, teaches her 18-year-old daughter to drive, saying that instilling legal concepts and traffic rules is necessary to start at a young age, because it will become part of the culture and thinking of young people, before they reach the age of learning to drive.

She added that educating them from childhood on the concepts of traffic safety and the rules of adherence to road laws will be rooted in their behavior and behavior, to become an integral part of their thinking and practices, supporting the teaching of these concepts throughout the stages of school education.

For its part, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai told «Emirates Today» that the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy focused within its four axes on traffic awareness, following the best practices in the world, adding that the global interest in traffic education requires targeting all segments of society with educational plans and programs, and that Because the level of traffic awareness is reflected in daily behaviors that practically affect a person's life and his physical and psychological safety.

The authority confirmed that, through coordination and cooperation with educational institutions and bodies in Dubai, it has devised programmes, events and activities related to traffic culture directed at the educational environment, including students, parents, bus drivers and drivers in general.

The authority drew attention to its monthly publication of the “Salama” magazine, which is distributed to more than 74 schools in the emirate, and is considered one of the most prominent educational programs for school students.

Smart safety bus

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai touched on the launch of the “Smart Safety Bus” programme, which was developed by the authority three years ago with the (STS) company. Students from the age group of six to 14 years, through technical and smart programs and media, focusing on traffic safety concepts and rules.
