New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that his visit to Doha was an opportunity to draw lessons about the role that the American city will play as one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup.

The New York mayor attended two 2022 World Cup matches in Doha during his first major overseas trip as mayor.

Adams arrived in Qatar from Greece on December 1, and said he plans to stay until December 4, according to the American New York Post.

During the visit, the Emir of Qatar met Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Mayor of New York. During the meeting, they reviewed the cooperation relations between Qatar and the United States, in addition to discussing a number of issues of mutual interest.

In statements to the American newspaper (The New York Times), New York Mayor expressed his great admiration for the advanced transportation infrastructure that Qatar has established, including the new subway system and express buses.

“It is essential to have a real transport system that is safe and reliable, and given that Qatar used the new transport system that they built here, they were able to get the vehicles off the road,” he said.

Adams praised the atmosphere of the World Cup and the development witnessed by the city of Doha, pointing out that he enjoyed attending the United States match with the Netherlands, despite the loss of the American team.

“This city (Doha) has really grown a lot, with so many great restaurants and spots that you can go to and enjoy even after the match, and I benefited from that as well.”

And he published a picture of him with US coach Greg Berhalter before his team's defeat against the Netherlands on Saturday in the round of 16.

And later, in another tweet, he wished the team good luck, commenting: “You really made your country proud in the World Cup, regardless of the results.”

Hell of a run and a hell of a team.

@USMNT, you made your country proud and we can't wait to join you to welcome the world to NYC-NJ in 2026. https://t.co/IWNK7IWn8k
