In early October, lifer Rakhmat Akilov applied for a so-called air hole leave, a special form of leave that those sentenced to long prison terms can be granted.

Akilov wanted to go out to eat, as well as buy shoes, jeans and a shirt.

But there was no meal out, and no shopping spree either.

Akilov's application was recently rejected by the Probation Service.

Tangible risk

According to the Probation Service, there is a significant risk that Akilov deviates in some way, commits new crimes, or misbehaves when granted leave.

Furthermore, the Correctional Service writes that extraordinary efforts are required to grant Akilov air hole leave, and that the risks outweigh his wish for a shorter stay outside the institution.

Convicted of terrorist offences

Rakhmat Akilov was sentenced to life in prison for terrorist crimes in 2018, after killing five people during a truck rampage on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm in 2017. Akilov was also sentenced to deportation with a ban on returning to Sweden.
