Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ratified a law banning propaganda of homosexuality, child molestation and gender reassignment.

Under this prohibition, work to spread "non-traditional" sexual relations and sexual harassment of children through the media, the Internet, advertisements, literary works and cinema is illegal.

The ban also includes calls to change the sex of young people through the same means.

The law also provides for the implementation of a mechanism that limits children's access to audio or video materials that contain information about homosexuals, and the law will grant monitoring power to one of the institutions authorized by the government.

Fines for violators of this law, both real and legal, range between 50,000 Russian rubles (about 827 dollars) and 10 million rubles (about 165,290 dollars).
