Did a Brazilian butt lift - ended up in the emergency room: "It smelled like death"

When you do a Brazilian butt lift, also called BBL, you take fat from other places on the body, such as the stomach, and then inject it into the butt to make it bigger.

The operation is fraught with risk, and in recent years several cases of patients who have had bad luck have been noticed in the media.  

“Coming back from a black hole” 

Sara had just returned home from her surgery trip to Turkey where she had a Brazilian butt lift, when she had to be rushed to hospital.  

- Patients who have had surgery abroad, it's like they come back from a black hole.

We know nothing, there is no documentation, says Himam Murad, assistant chief physician in emergency surgery and trauma at Karolinska Institutet. 

He was one of the doctors who treated Sara and she has approved him telling SVT about it.  

Severe blood poisoning 

Sara suffered an infection and came to the emergency room with signs of serious blood poisoning and was in a bad general condition.

If she had waited to seek treatment, it is unclear whether she would have survived, according to Himam Murad.  

According to the then surgeon at the Esteworld clinic where Sara was operated on, she was healthy when she went home.

Sara herself says that she got sick already in Turkey.

SVT has contacted Esteworld, which has so far not answered the questions.

Their Swedish partner Advanced Aesthetic regrets Sara's loss.

They emphasize that they take good responsibility for their customers and do not violate any laws or regulations. 

Risk of blockage   

Brazilian butt lift is also performed in Sweden.

At plastic surgeon Fredrik Gewalli's clinic, approximately 100 such operations have been performed.  

- What is dangerous about the Brazilian butt lift is several things.

Extensive liposuction is performed, which causes fluid imbalance.

But the biggest problem is that when you inject the fat, you can get too deep, into the muscle layer.

There is a risk that the fat instead enters the venous system and you can suffer from a blood clot, says Fredrik Gewalli.
