The chemical group Ineos has signed a 20-year contract for the supply of natural gas from the USA to Germany.

1.4 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are to be shipped per year, starting in 2027, as the British group announced on Friday.

Ineos has a subsidiary based in Cologne and was formerly a joint venture between BP and Bayer.

The energy supply contract with the US supplier Sempra Infrastructure contains a non-binding part, according to which the amount can be increased by 0.2 million.

The planned liquid gas terminal in Brunsbüttel on the North Sea is to be used.

Ineos had already signed a contract for regasification capacities for this in the summer.

According to the company, both agreements will “guarantee much-needed security of supply for Europe”.

Ineos wants to cover its own needs and those of its customers with the imported gas.

The volume of the deal is slightly lower than the agreement between Qatar and a US company that became known this week, under which up to 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year are to be brought to Brunsbüttel from 2026.

This amount would cover about three percent of Germany's annual requirements.
