Chinanews.com reported on December 5 that the Semeru volcano in eastern Java, Indonesia, began to erupt on the 4th local time.

The Indonesian government announced on the same day that the alert level of Mount Semeru was raised from level 3 to the highest level 4.

  According to reports, the video showed that the volcanic ash spewed out of the volcano went straight into the sky, covering many surrounding areas.

Alfianto, a local volcano volunteer worker, said: "Since this morning, most of the roads have been closed. Now the volcanic ash is shrouded, and the view of the mountain can no longer be seen clearly."

At 2:46 on December 4, 2022 local time, Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia began to erupt violently.

  Indonesian authorities have begun evacuating people near the volcano and urged people not to move within eight kilometers of the eruption's center.

As of later in the day, no casualties were reported.

  Indonesia's National Disaster Relief Agency stated that 1,979 people were sent to 11 shelters, and many villages were affected by the eruption.

  The Japan Meteorological Agency warned on the 4th that the eruption of Mount Semeru could cause a tsunami in Japan, but later said there was no tsunami.

  Mount Semeru is 3,676 meters above sea level and is the highest volcano in Java, Indonesia, as well as one of the most active volcanoes in the country.

On December 4, 2021, the volcano began a violent eruption that lasted for several days, killing more than 40 people and injuring more than 100 people. About 3,000 houses, 38 schools and a bridge were destroyed in the eruption.
